We were so excited to pair you with Mary O’Donnell. Can you tell us why you took part in ReBalance ’24?

Working in music as a woman has come with various challenges along the way, especially coming in at a young age and being in male-dominated spaces, so it felt like a natural “yes” to be involved in something like this.

Do you think you approach working with brand new acts differently at all?

I wanted to give Mary the space to find her own way of working in the studio as it was her first time.  I wouldn’t have wanted to be told what to do during my first time at a studio, so I didn’t want to impose anything on her.  I think it’s best to give artists the room to work things out for themselves, and then give help when they need it.

How do you adapt your work to each new project?

Some artists want direction, some have a very clear idea going in. I think it changes depending on the people, their relationship, and the tune.

As artists yourselves, how do you balance the creative direction of a project with any technical requirements?

I think it’s important to have an engineer present for periods to allow everyone to think mainly about the creation.

Thinking back to your time at Strongroom Studios working with Mary – are there any stand-out moments?

Watching Mary’s development, and seeing her confidence by the end of the week was really great.  She’s equipped now to go into any studio and know what she needs and what to ask for.

What tips would you give anyone starting out in engineering and production?

Do what you want, always.  Don’t get pushed into boxes you don’t fit into.  Work with your friends and people you feel comfortable with.  Find something you love doing and do it more!

Do you remember any key advice you were given that you’d like to share?

Practice (hated it at the time, obviously it helps). Never sign a contract without someone looking over it. Trust your gut!

Any words on ReBalance ’24, or your time being part of the programme?

Loved it, and would come back again!

Lastly, any favourite tracks you’d like people to listen to right now?
